And none of your post sounds cynical at all, apart from generalizing all AAA games together. My favorite ending out of any game has been from Assassin's Creed Revelations - which gave a very strong ending to 2, Brotherhood and Revelations together - the best 3 games from that franchise IMO and it's still a memorable experience to me when I first saw it.
But that also surely has at least a little to do with games being much smaller back then. If the final 2 levels of an NES game are trash for example, that could be a whole 25% of your game. Whereas in a major modern release it might just be the last 5% and won't bring the game as a whole down quite as much. For enough people at least... I know for me personally a let-down of a final boss makes the whole experience a little bit disappointing.
